My First Dry Needling Experience: What It Was Really Like

My First Dry Needling Experience: What It Was Really Like

July 27, 2025

I’ll be honest: when I first heard the words “dry needling”, I wasn’t exactly eager to try it. As someone who works in the therapy world, I’d heard plenty of chatter—some people swear by it, others are a little skeptical, and let’s face it, the idea of needles in your muscles doesn’t sound relaxing.

But curiosity (and chronic tightness in my shoulders and TMJ issues) finally won. So here’s what it was really like when I tried dry needling for the first time—and why I’d absolutely do it again.

What Even Is Dry Needling?

Before I dive into my experience, here’s a quick rundown for those new to the concept. Dry needling is a skilled intervention where a trained clinician inserts thin, sterile filiform needles into tight muscles and trigger points—tight bands or knots in muscles that can refer pain, limit mobility, or cause dysfunction. Dry needling can also be utilized for tendons, ligaments, around nerves and scar tissue for healing and pain relief.

It’s not acupuncture (though it uses similar needles). Dry needling is based on Western anatomy and is typically used by physical or occupational therapists to treat things like:

  • Muscle tightness and pain

  • Headaches and migraines

  • Joint restrictions

  • Posture-related issues

  • Sports or repetitive strain injuries

My Experience: Step-by-Step

Step 1: The Evaluation

Before any needles came out, the therapist took time to assess my symptoms, movement, and muscle tone. I had some nagging tension around my upper back and shoulder blade that just wouldn’t let go—despite stretching, foam rolling, and massage. I also had TMJ issues due to stress jaw clenching. My jaw became sore due to the constant clenching from all the stress.

Step 2: Prep and Education

She explained everything: where she was going to place the needles, what sensations to expect, and how my body might respond afterward. That alone eased my nerves. Dry needling might sound intense, but it’s done with intention—not randomly poking muscles!

Step 3: The Needling Itself

Here’s the surprising part: it didn’t hurt the way I expected. The needle itself is incredibly thin, so most insertions felt like a light pinch or barely noticeable. The real sensation came when she reached the trigger point—sometimes a deep twitch response in the muscle. It was a weird but satisfying release, like a cramp being undone from the inside out.

Step 4: The Aftermath

Right after the needling, I felt a deep sense of release—like the tension in my muscle had finally let go and melted away. My therapist encouraged hydration and light movement to keep blood flow going. I was a little sore for the next 24 hours, kind of like post-workout soreness. But the next day? I increased range of motion and decreased tension in my shoulder as well as less tension and achiness in my jaw. I was no longer clenching my jaw like I was.

What Surprised Me Most

  • It was faster and gentler than I imagined.

  • The twitch response is strange, but not painful—it felt productive.

  • It helped muscles I didn’t even realize were contributing to the problem.

  • The results weren’t magic, but they were meaningful and jump started my progress.

Would I Recommend It?

Absolutely—especially if you’ve been dealing with stubborn muscle tension, postural tightness, spasticity, or pain that just won’t budge. That said, dry needling works best as part of a holistic treatment plan, not a standalone fix.

If you’re considering it, talk with a licensed therapist who’s certified in dry needling. They’ll help determine if it’s right for your goals—and make sure it’s done safely and effectively.

Final Thoughts

Trying dry needling for the first time was definitely out of my comfort zone—but I’m so glad I did. It gave me insight into my own body, reminded me how interconnected our systems are, and helped reset muscles that had been locked up for months.

Whether you’re a movement professional, athlete, or just tired of chronic tension, dry needling might be a game-changer. And like any good therapy experience, it starts with listening—to your body, your provider, and your goals.
