Myofascial Release

MYOFASCIAL RELEASE

Myofascial release (MFR) is a gentle, hands-on manual therapy technique designed to address areas of tension and restriction within the muscles and surrounding connective tissue, known as fascia. Using sustained pressure, gentle stretching, and soft-tissue techniques, treatment is individualized to areas of restriction and discomfort.

Myofascial release may help improve tissue mobility, flexibility, comfort, and ease of movement while reducing muscular and fascial tension. It can be incorporated into occupational therapy or wellness-based services to support mobility, functional movement, relaxation, and overall well-being.

Sessions are individualized based on each person’s needs, goals, and response to treatment.

HOW DOES MYOFASCIAL RELEASE WORK?

Unlike traditional massage, which often uses rhythmic strokes or kneading of the muscles, myofascial release typically involves slower, sustained pressure and gentle stretching of the tissues. The therapist identifies areas of restriction and applies individualized hands-on techniques intended to encourage improved tissue mobility and movement.

Treatment may include:

  • Sustained myofascial stretching and pressure
  • Soft-tissue mobilization
  • Gentle tissue elongation
  • Trigger point and localized soft-tissue techniques
  • Scar and tissue mobility techniques when appropriate
  • Movement and positioning techniques
  • Education in stretching, mobility, posture, and self-management strategies

The amount of pressure and treatment approach are adjusted to the individual’s comfort, needs, and goals.

WHO MAY BENEFIT?

Myofascial release may be appropriate for individuals experiencing muscular or soft-tissue tightness, stiffness, restricted movement, or discomfort that interferes with everyday activities, exercise, work, sleep, or general well-being.

It may be incorporated into treatment for individuals experiencing:

  • Neck, shoulder, or back tension
  • Muscle tightness and stiffness
  • Restricted range of motion
  • Postural strain
  • Repetitive-use or work-related tension
  • Soft-tissue restrictions following injury or periods of limited mobility
  • Scar-related tissue restrictions
  • Difficulty moving comfortably during everyday activities
  • General muscular tension associated with an active or physically demanding lifestyle

Myofascial techniques may also be incorporated into wellness-focused services when the goal is to maintain mobility, promote comfortable movement, address areas of tension, and support overall physical well-being.

WHAT DOES A SESSION FEEL LIKE?

Myofascial release is generally slower and more targeted than a traditional relaxation massage. Your therapist may maintain gentle or moderate pressure over a restricted area while allowing the tissues time to respond and gradually lengthen.

Because treatment is individualized, some areas may receive sustained pressure while others may be addressed through stretching, movement, or other manual techniques. Communication is encouraged throughout the session so that pressure and positioning can be adjusted for comfort.

MYOFASCIAL RELEASE & THERAPY

When provided as part of therapy, myofascial release is not simply performed to address tight tissue in isolation. Manual techniques may be combined with movement, therapeutic exercise, positioning, education, and other interventions to address how soft-tissue restrictions affect meaningful daily activities and functional performance.

Depending on the individual’s goals, treatment may focus on improving the ability to move comfortably and efficiently during activities such as working, exercising, completing household tasks, participating in hobbies, or performing daily routines.

AN INDIVIDUALIZED APPROACH

Every person’s movement patterns, areas of restriction, and goals are different. Treatment begins with consideration of your concerns and functional or wellness goals so that manual techniques can be tailored specifically to you.

Myofascial release may be provided independently as part of an appropriate wellness-focused occupational therapy service or incorporated with other occupational therapy interventions based on individual needs.
